Law System
*Based on the performance of my fleshly techniques.
*Focus is always on me and what I have done and am doing.
*Behavior = being. What I do gives me my identity.
Grace System
*Based on being righteous in my spirit.
*Focus is always on God and what He has done and is doing through me.
*Being produces behavior.
*My identity causes me to obey God.
James 1:22-25 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does.
(The law of freedom) Romans 6:15-23
When we are doers of the word, we are NOT doers to be something, we are doers because we are something.
We are doers of the word to know Christ more. In a deeper way. Ephesians 4:13
So what’s the solution? When you walk away from the mirror, (God’s word, who you are in Christ, Christ’s finished work), don’t forget who you are. We cannot judge ourselves based on how we are doing, rather, what Christ has done.
What are you seeing when you look in the mirror?
What kind of person are you? (forgotten what kind of person he was)
You’re loved- Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 1 John 4:16 We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
You’re Accepted- 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God does not see as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Ezekiel 36:26 Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
You’re Worthy- Luke 12:6-7 Are five sparrows not sold for two assaria? And yet not one of them has gone unnoticed in the sight of God. 7 But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.
You’re Secure - Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise,
Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You’re a Saint- Romans 1:7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. The NT refers to us as saints 60 times.
You’re Blessed - Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
You’re Saved -Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
You’re reconciled - 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their wrongdoings against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
You’re Justified / Sanctified- Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. 1 Corinthians 6:11 Such were some of you, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
You’re New- 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
You’re Forgiven- Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of His grace Colossians 2:13 And when you were dead in your wrongdoings and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our sins, Hebrews 10:12-14 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
You’re Adopted- Ephesians 1:5 He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, Galatians 4:5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons and daughters.
You’re Victorious- 1 John 5:4 For whoever has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith. 1 Corinthians 15:57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
