Forgiveness

March 7, 2022Homosexuality is one of those hot-button issues these days that is danced around for fear of offending someone's feelings or fear of being labeled a homophobe.
When we look at what the bible says about this particular sin we see it in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
Also, in 1 Timothy 1:9-10 9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and worldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, homosexuals, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching.
In 1 Corinthians homosexuality is on the same list as thieves and the greedy. In 1 Timothy it’s right there with liars and literally whatever else is contrary to sound teaching. What's my point? Sin is sin, it doesn’t matter what flavor.
When we enter into a relationship with the living God we become something new. A new creation.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, all things have become new.
That’s why 1 Corinthians 6:11 says "Such were some of you, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God". After rattling off that long list of sins Paul says; “Such were some of you”
You see when you are in Christ you're not that list anymore. You are new, washed, sanctified, justified.
Homosexuality is part of your biography, not your biology or your spiritual core.
You don't need to wear that indwelling sin pattern as an identity.
Is my same-sex attraction (SSA) a reflection of who I am or is it a distortion of it through original sin? It’s a distortion. Lust is a counterfeit for love. Sexuality is not who you are, it's how you are.
After you are in Christ, born again, and continue to believe homosexuality is your identity, you are believing a lie. A distortion brought about by a sin pattern.
Because of the fall of Adam, we are born into sin. Everyone has a flavor of sin that seems to be predominant in their life. Same-sex attraction lust, opposite-sex attraction lust. It doesn’t matter what flavor, again sin is sin.
One question I get regularly is; can you be a Christian and be a homosexual? That question presumes that homosexuality is an identity. It’s not. It’s a sin pattern. You could also ask; can you be a liar and be a Christian? The same premise, that question presumes identity. Can Christians lie? Of course, they can. Can a Christian struggle with a homosexual sin pattern? Of course, they can. Can a Christian struggle with a SSA sin pattern? Of course, they can.
How can someone with those struggles find freedom? The only way to freedom is truth. When we enter into a relationship with Jesus we enter into his identity, his righteousness, his holiness. We put on Christ. The new man. We need to see those false identities for what they are; FALSE and believe our new identity in Christ.
When you change your core beliefs about yourself, your thoughts, feeling, and actions change automatically. Embrace you’re your new identity.
